I seem to read a lot of books that take place in Great Britain, specifically London. I’m pretty sure it was one of the Bridget Jones books that introduced me to Pimm’s. Now, if you know Bridget, you know she is not very discriminatory in her beverages. She pretty much likes them all. But, since I had never had or heard of this one before, I decided to go on a little search. Luckily, I only had to go down to my local wine store to find it. It may be in grocery stores too, I don’t know. My wine/liquor store is the first place I looked and since they had it… I didn’t keep looking.
I don’t know what Pimm’s is made of. It was first created in 1840 and the recipe is top secret; only known to 6 people. I didn’t research this or anything. It says so right on the bottle. It is “blended from fine liqueurs and fruit extracts.” It also says to blend with ginger ale or lemon-lime soda and garnish with a lemon. Easy enough.
I had to buy quite a large bottle of Pimm’s as it only came in one size. Way too much for a “taste.” So, I decided to give it a try at the annual family pool party. I was sure if I didn’t like it other family members would help make sure it didn’t go to waste.
I filled my cup with ice. Poured in some Pimm’s. Opened my ginger ale… nothing. It was flat. Such a bummer. Luckily, I had a bottle of Sprite ready as a back up. So, I opened up my Sprite, topped off the cup and squeezed both a lemon and lime wedge in there, because I’m crazy like that. It was delicious, refreshing and the perfect summer cocktail! I highly recommend you give it a try!
In fact, I liked it so much I was quite sad I had to leave what remained at my Aunt’s house. It would be rude to take it back home, right? So I left it there. I hope Aunt M and Uncle K are enjoying it. And, I bought another bottle for the house. Problem solved.
We actually have had a break from the stifling heat and a couple of beautiful days here. The kids played in the backyard while I grilled dinner and enjoyed my Pimm’s Cup. This time I used Ginger Ale.
I can’t decide if I like it better with Ginger Ale or Sprite. I will have to do more research. I will admit, regardless of the mixer, it does taste a little better out of a plastic cup while sipped by the pool (but only a little).
Enjoy what is left of the summer!
