Lent 2022

Happy almost spring!  It has been feeling like spring in STL this week and it makes me so happy.  It is time for new beginnings.

So, I know not everyone celebrates Lent but I will never pass up an opportunity to try and better myself.  I don’t do the traditional “give something up” for Lent but I do try to do something worthwhile for myself.  It’s kind of like New Year’s resolutions (which I’m not a fan of) but better because there is an end date.  So, anyone want to better themselves for the next 6 weeks?

My #1 goal is to delete photos from my phone.  I have almost 8,000 pictures on my phone.  Most of them 19 shots of the same plate of food.  And  few of my kids.  It’s ridiculous and when I actually want to find a picture I can’t because I’m sorting through all the photos of polenta.  I figured I have to go through 200 pictures a day.  It will be a pain but it HAS to happen.  Just ridiculous.  Well, I thought it was ridiculous until I talked to my sister about it.  She has over 20,000 photos on her phone.  She needs to start going to meetings.

Goal #2 is to play less games on my phone.  I’m a phone game junkie.  It’s embarrassing.  Toon Blast is my favorite, followed by Bricks Breaker Quest and Harry Potter Puzzles and Spells.  I’m not giving up Wordle because it is only once a day.  If you don’t have those games on your phone, don’t add them.  They’re addictive.

As I was explaining to my family what I was doing for Lent my husband said, “So you are replacing spending time on your phone by spending time on your phone?”  It was quite hilarious in the moment.  Anyway, my goal isn’t to not be on my phone, it’s to stop wasting time (aka playing games).  Removing photos isn’t wasting time.

I’m writing this on Ash Wednesday.  There is a chance, a small chance, I will give up drinking.  I think I might.  I’m not sure.  I can assure you that I have not had a drink in the last two days.  I’m not sure about all of Lent.  After all, the Oscars will air over Lent.  And so will March Madness.  And I have book club.  The Oscars will be the hardest because I have my traditions (Chinese food and a bottle of Cakebread Chardonnay).  But the Oscars are on a Sunday so according to one of the new rules my mom adds to Lent each year we are allowed to “break our fast” on Sundays… you know… just like Jesus did.

Are you going to use the next 6 weeks to better yourself?  If so, what are you doing?  Let me know in the comments below.

If you do actually celebrate Lent and try to not eat meat on Fridays here are some old posts about menu options:

Our Ash Wednesday dinner consisted of Bean & Cheese Enchiladas, Mango-Avocado Salad and taco rice from a package.  It was quite tasty if I do say so myself.

Tonight we are having some sort of seafood but I’m not sure what yet.  Probably Shrimp & Grits, Lobster Risotto or Giada’s Salmon Pasta.  Remember how my Aunt Julie was on the Drew Barrymore Show?!?!!!  Well, the pasta she made on that show has become a family favorite.  My A (the pickiest in the house ) loves it and asks for it all the time!

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. Thanks so much for including all these delicious recipes that I need to revisit! I, too, have 20,000 pictures on my phone (and now pay extra for storage instead of taking your great advice to delete). I speak the same language as your lovely sister.

  2. Hello. To be clear, the rule during Lent regarding “anything goes” on Sunday is even on the internet. It is the same rule the church had when I was growing up. Another thing…maybe not drink on specific nights. Or give up wine and have a cocktail. Trust me, that is still difficult when you really like wine. Whatever you do, I applaud your efforts. Love, your Mom.

    1. Well, when we were growing up you never mentioned we could break our fast on Sunday. That’s all I’m sayin’
