BLT

Ahhh… the BLT. I could do something fun with this. Adding avocado isn’t new but it is so, so very good on a BLT. Have you ever added brie cheese? A Brie-L-T if you will? They had a BrieLT at a place near my old office.  Heaven. But we are right at the end of summer.  Tomatoes are at their peak. Let’s enjoy a classic BLT.

It is always important to use quality ingredients when making anything. However, when there are only 5 ingredients it is all the more imperative. So go and get the good stuff!

The Bread: In general I think white bread is perfect for a BLT. You can never go wrong with a French country loaf. If you are in St. Louis and can grab some Companion Pain Beaucaire, it would make a fabulous BLT. I have another great bakery a couple of blocks from my house, Breadsmith. They make an unbelievable Honey Oat Bran loaf that I treat myself with every once in a while. It is the perfect bread choice for my BLT! Give it a decent toast but not so much it is going to cut the roof of your mouth (the worst).

The Mayo: Yes, you have to use mayo. Yes, you have to use Hellmann’s.

The Bacon: You have wiggle room here. Use your favorite bacon. Most people like thick bacon but I actually like thin bacon on my BLTs. I like how crispy thin pieces of bacon get; I think it adds to the sandwich and makes it easier to eat. If you like thick bacon, by all means, go for it. Just make sure you get it really crispy when you cook it. You don’t want to take a bite of your sandwich and have a whole piece of bacon slide out because you couldn’t bite through it (unacceptable).  Two layers of bacon going different directions; one layer vertical, one layer horizontal.  Even coverage is key.

The Tomato: The reason this is an #OdeToSummer #SummerFinale recipe! You are never going to have a better tomato than you can get right now. Go grab some homegrown tomatoes out of your garden, at the farmers market or at your local grocery store. I think by now you know how much I love tomatoes but that my absolute favorite are heirloom tomatoes. What a pretty treat for my BLT!  Medium-thick slices that don’t overlap too much so your sandwich isn’t slippery.

The Lettuce: Iceberg. It must be cold, crunchy, good-old iceberg lettuce.

Slice on the diagonal, add some chips and watermelon and you have a plate of summer perfection!  Enjoy!
